How dating profiles have got an agricultural vibe.

Have you ever described yourself like a second hand car?

It’s a tried, and tested, way to be a little playful whilst taking a cheeky sideswipe at yourself in the process. Experts will tell you that self defamation and the ability to laugh at yourself is a positive personality trait – and so it seems.

But describing yourself like a vintage piece of thoroughly muddy agricultural machinery? Well that’s taking it to a whole new level of niche. It’s certainly becoming a thing though with the used car references morphing into classic tractor territory.

We have even had a handful of especially muddy singles relate their dating history to that of a combine harvester.

We first noticed the profile trend when 80% muddy Sally, from Lancashire, intro’d her online dating bio on Muddy Matches by suggesting she had ‘the bodywork of a Massey Ferguson 399 tractor, but in need of some well deserved TLC’.

Eyebrows were raised, not least due to the degree of detail when it came to model and make.

It goes on; Tom, separated, 51 from the Cotswolds, signed off his bio by saying ‘just like my treasured 1972 Ford 3000,  I struggle to get started in the morning but still had plenty of pulling power left in me.’

Then there’s 40-something male mud lover Allan, from Suffolk, who hoped to catch the eye of ‘country minded ladies’ by advertising his credentials in comparison to a John Deere 4020 – a 1970 model to be specific.

He advised prospective new ‘owners’ that there was ‘some slight damage to the bodywork and there was a dodgy suspension’ to deal with. But critically, ‘no leaks’.

32 year old Devon-based singleton Mel followed suit, noting her body type as ‘All the curves and contours of a New Holland T7200’.

There’s also plenty of mention of ‘light restoration’ and ‘good condition for its age’ if that’s your thing.

But it’s 36 year old George, a generational family farmer from Shropshire, who particularly pushes the boat out. George tells us he’s in ‘as good a nick’ as his classic 1983 IH438 International Harvester – and that ‘he goes out just as infrequently these’ as the combine harvester.  He wanted to change that; the frequency of going out (not the vintage of his combine).

There’s a fine line though.

At the end of last year, describing yourself as ‘having 2 careful owners’ has become a questionable TikTok trend, with critics expressing concerns about people ‘objectifying yourself’ against inanimate item. There was plenty of comment that ‘owners’ and ‘mileage on the clock’ was somewhat demeaning, especially for females.

What could be contrustued as lighthearted sense of humour, to stand out from the crowd on busy dating site like Muddy Matches, isn’t for everyone it seems.

However, it is certainly easy to see why such references are finding their way into dating profiles when building countryside connections and looking to match based upon shared rural interests.

They sure do get noticed, and they certainly raise a smile. The ability to make fun of yourself and not take life too seriously is definitely something we know relates well to the mud loving singles who look to match, meet, date with us.

In fact, those happy to compare themselves to ag tech know their audience. Over 12% of all country singles registered on Muddy Matches had declared more than a passing interest in Tractors, Diggers and Ag machinery amongst their hobbies and interests to match upon.

For now, it seems, it’s a trend to simply plough on with.
