How to Stay Safe on a First Date

Sunday, May 28th, 2017

Online dating is a safe way to meet new people, but it is still important to be mindful of your own safety, whether that’s online, or on your first date.

When you meet up with someone for the first time, you should keep a healthy level of caution to ensure your personal safety.

Choose a busy public place

It should go without saying, but never, ever invite someone to your home on your first date. The best place to meet is somewhere where there will be a lot of people around you. For example, cafes, pubs and restaurants are popular first date venues.

Tell a friend where you are going

Tell a friend or family member where you are going and what time you expect to arrive there. Also let them know how long you expect to spend with your date. If it goes well, you can let your friend know that you will be spending more time with your new date and not to worry if they don’t hear from you at the expected time.

If you want to go the extra mile, have a code word for your friend if you would like them to come and save you from a bad date.

Plan your transport in advance

Never accept an offer of a lift from your date until you get to know each other well (even if they are going past your door). Try to

If you plan to drink alcohol on your date, make sure that you have planned your public transport options, or have pre-booked a taxi. If public transport doesn’t run late into the evening, make sure that you know the number of a local taxi company if your date overruns.

Don’t be overly polite

If at any point, you feel unsafe, or uncomfortable, tell your date that you would not like to continue to see them.

You can also contact the dating website to let them know that you have doubts about the person.
