You have found your perfect match via an online dating website, but you happen to live a long way away from each other. How do you make it work?

Meet in the middle

When you are planning to meet for the first time try to find somewhere in the middle. This will mean that you both have to put the same amount of effort into meeting up as one another.

From then on wards, you can take it in turns to visit one another, but make sure to book into a hotel, or to stay with friends nearby until you know each other well enough to play host.

Even if you have been chatting online for a long time, it is unwise to stay over at their house on a first date just because it is convenient.

Communication is key

If you live hundreds of miles away from each other, you won’t be able to see each other in the flesh every day, but you will be able to communicate in lots of other ways. A good old-fashioned phone call will help you to connect with one another, or a video call will allow you to see each other while you chat.

Or, if you are not the chatty type, it is nice to send fun messages and pictures to each other.

Share the same experiences

Couples who live together get to enjoy watching the same TV programmes, or films together while sat next to one another, but you don’t need to be in the same room to share an experience together.

Arrange to watch the same TV programmes at the same time, or play an online game together.

Keep yourself busy

Long distance relationships do mean that you will spend a lot of time apart, so it helps to be distracted when you miss your partner a lot. Arrange to meet up with friends when you feel lonely, or take up a new hobby to fill your time after work.
