Social etiquette can be a tricky thing at the best of times, but the Christmas period can lead to more social dilemmas than at other times of the year.

Here are some common festive dilemmas that you may face if you are in a new relationship, or if you are using online dating websites.

Should I take my new date to Christmas parties?

Before taking your new date to any Christmas dos think about how comfortable they are interacting with strangers. It can be pretty intimidating meeting lots of people at once and is easier if they have met one or two people beforehand.

Also, think about how comfortable you will be introducing your date to your friends, family or colleagues and how you will describe your relationship status.

What about presents?

It’s a good idea to discuss this one with one another to make sure that you don’t have an awkward situation where one person has bought a present, while the other hasn’t. If you are a new couple, don’t buy a diamond ring or a wide-screen TV, a small present like a box of chocolates would be more appropriate.

Where should we spend Christmas Day?

If it’s your first Christmas as a couple, it is best to spend the day with your respective families. You could spend Christmas Eve together instead.

Should I take a break from dating over Christmas?

No! Christmas Day itself is a very quiet day for online dating websites, but the period between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day is on par with Valentine’s Day as the busiest time of the year. Take a break on Christmas Day, but if you have any down time after Christmas, it’s the perfect time to see if there are any suitable matches in your area. You never know, you might even get a snog under the mistletoe on New Year’s eve.
