Smile

Smiling makes you look kind and approachable. Flash your date a smile when you greet one another.

Sit up straight

Slumping in your seat can make you look disinterested or stroppy, whereas sitting upright makes you look comfortable and confident.

Lean in

When someone is talking to you, lean in slightly to show that you are interested in what they are saying. We automatically do this in a loud environment, but if it’s a little quieter, you will need to think about moving in towards them.

Don’t cross your arms

Crossing your arms and legs can feel comforting when you are a little nervous, but it can give the impression that you are being defensive.

Mimic their body language

When you are very comfortable with someone, you will naturally begin to monitor their body language. In the meantime, try to mimic subtle body language clues, for example, if they touch their face, try touching your face.

Focus

It’s easy to get distracted by what is going on around you, but you should focus all of your attention on your date. You should also try to keep a high level of eye contact throughout your date.

Touch their arm

Touch can help you to connect with someone and reassures them that you are on friendly terms, touching someone on the arm or the hand is a way of doing this without being overbearing. If they move away from you, it may be that they are not comfortable being touched by you at this stage.

When you begin to feel more comfortable with your date, your body language will match your demeanour.
