Silence isn’t Golden

Speech bubble with Hello written in it.

There’s a time and a place for silence – libraries, exams, moments of calm contemplation – but internet dating is not the best place to be the strong, silent type.

The single best way to find a date on an online dating site is to send messages to everyone you are interested in meeting. Yes, you may have to deal with a few strong, silent types yourself, but it’s a lot more effective than sitting back and waiting for other people to get in contact with you.

Make yourself known

Make your profile ‘loud’ by adding humour and unique information. Think about, would you rather get in touch with the person who mentioned an interesting anecdote, or the person who likes ‘spending time watching a DVD with a glass of wine’? Think about a bizarre situation you’re found yourself in, or an unusual hobby that you have.

Favourite people

If you’re too shy to send a message, or if you would like to test the waters, you could add someone to your Favourites List. This lets them know that you are interested in hearing from you.

Send messages

Your message doesn’t need to be very long or even particularly well crafted. A simple “Hello, how are you?” is better than saying nothing at all. However, it’s a good idea to refer to something that the person has written in their profile, as it shows that you’ve taken the time to read it.

Arrange to meet

You can never really tell how you really fee about someone until you meet in person. Try to arrange to meet one another in a safe public place after you have exchanged a few messages. If you are unable to meet for a while, you could try Skyping one another, or speaking on the phone.
