How long you spend on an online dating website can depend on a number of factors; how proactive you are, whether you live in a heavily populated area, the quality of your profile text and whether you have a good profile photo.

For some, they can meet within a week of joining a dating website, for others it can take months or even years to meet the one.

Here’s how to speed up the process:

Write a 300 word profile

Your profile should be long enough to tell people about yourself, but not so long that there is no air of mystery.

Be positive, but don’t brag

Your profile shouldn’t be negative and full of complaints as it can put people off. A few dislikes don’t do too much harm if they are blended in with lots of positive and neutral words.

On the other end of the scale, bragging should be kept to an absolute minimum. You may think that talking about a flashy car or a high income is impressive, but it can come across as arrogant.

Keep looking

If you only log in once a month, it will take a lot longer to find your perfect match than if you review your matches on a regular basis. You can save searches, so that it’s easy to quickly browse them on a daily basis.

Don’t be too restrictive

When you do create a search term, try not to be too prescriptive as it would be a dreadful shame to miss out on someone because they are an inch too short or because they don’t have a particular hair colour.

You could save a search term that is quite inclusive and one that is a bit more focused, so that you can get the best of both worlds.

Be proactive

Don’t wait for people to get in contact with you! Just write a simple message to everyone who you like and get the conversation started.

It’s also a good idea to add people to your favourites list to let them know that you are interested in them.

Read your messages

If you’ve got messages waiting because a) you keep meaning to reply to them, but never get round to it or b) don’t want to pay for a subscription just yet, be mindful of the fact that the other person may find someone else in the time it takes you.

If you’re not too keen to subscribe to read just one message, think about all the other people who you could contact yourself.

Be patient

If you have been online dating for a while, give these tips a try and be patient – you’re ideal date may well be joining up now.
