Girl dancing on her dad's feet

In honour of Father’s Day on 17th June, we asked friends and family what their own fathers taught them about love and the world of dating; which revealed some good, solid advice and some really rather sweet answers.

The classic advice

When it comes to dating, our dads have ‘been there and done that’ long before we even existed, so they’re a good source of dependable advice.

“My dad’s advice was always spot on” said Andrew “unfortunately, it was ignoring it and doing the opposite that made me realise how right he was usually.”

“My dad doesn’t tend to give us much advice” said Karen “but he did tell me to enjoy myself when I go on a date.” Laine’s dad also tried to avoid giving too much advice, but reminded her that “there’s plenty more fish in the sea”.

Lauren was told to “never go to the cinema or a theatre as you won’t be able to get to know each other properly.”

The practical advice

Love isn’t the most rational of things, so you can rely on someone older and wiser than yourself to bring you back down to earth.

Susan said “My dad told me that moving in with someone doesn’t solve your problems” and Lauren was told by her dad that “love isn’t about drama, it’s about finding someone you feel comfortable being yourself with.”

The gentlemanly advice

“My Dad taught me to always pay for drinks and dinner when you go out with a girl for the first time” said Alex, “I think I’m quite traditional like he is and most of the women that I’ve dated seem to appreciate it.”

Henry’s dad also taught him about how to be a gentleman and said that “you should treat every woman like a princess and no woman is going to object to that.”

The ‘aww isn’t that cute’ answers

Sometimes even the toughest of men can say the sweetest things, like Grace’s dad who said: “I should find someone who loves me as much as he does.”

Katie said: “My dad said that nobody will ever be good enough for me, which set the bar pretty high.”
