Chaffinch – tick.
Collared dove – tick.

Did you know that over 14% of the rural singles actively dating on Muddy Matches have listed birdwatching and nature conservation as preferred hobbies on their online dating profile with us?

Birdwatching is one of the nation’s favourite pasttimes, and we hear from many a country couple who say they enjoy plenty of quiet moments together, observing the comings and goings of feathered friends.

At Muddy Matches HQ, in our little rural corner of Northamptonshire, we have a pair of Robins and a greenfinch who regularly, happily take up residence on the wooden farm fences just outside our office window. They do their playful best to very temporarily distract us from matching singles who share our love of British birds and wildlife.

We are soon back to it (matching is our bread and butter), but not before we’ve found the beauty in what the British countryside serves up on our doorstep.

That’s why we, like many of the outdoor loving singles who choose to date with us, will be taking part in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend. It’s expected that more than 700,000 nature lovers will have the binoculars out to keep track of the birdlife.

Spending one hour over this weekend to appreciate nature is fascinating. Do it with your muddy match and its quality time spent together too. It also gives welcome chance to take a breather from the pace of life and just renew your love of green space and fresh air.

It has real meaning too. We were shocked to hear that we have lost 38 million birds from the UK skies in the last 50 years. Take the starling; it has declined so much that it is now on the UK Red List for birds.

There is so much emphasis placed on other areas of conservation and preservation which gain public appeal, that our feathered friends are often overlooked.

Not this weekend. Not on our watch.
