Ask the Internet

Man typing on a white keyboard under a blue light.

Search engines are a great place to find advice, especially advice that you’d be too embarrassed to ask people in real life. So, we’ve trawled the Google trends list to find out what are the most commonly searched for terms in the categories of ‘dating’ and ‘relationships’.

Long distance relationships

The search term ‘long distance relationships’ has become more and more popular since 2009.

Long distance relationships can be tricky, but it is worth the extra effort if you are perfect for one another.  If you’re flexible about where you live, or if you regularly travel around the country for work you will have more choice than someone who only wishes to meet someone within 5 miles of where they live.

If you’re getting to know someone who lives a long way away, you can use a video call to see whether you click before meeting up.

In terms of where you meet, you could go for a halfway point, or you could combine meeting them with a mini-break with friends, just don’t take your friends with you on the date itself!

Relationship quotes

Relationship quotes are very popular and adorn t-shirts, cushions, picture frames and Facebook feeds. It’s also one of the most popular searches on Google (possibly for the purpose of filling up social media feeds).

Here are a few of our favourite relationship quotes:

“A true relationship is two imperfect people refusing to give up on each other.”

“The best feeling in the world is knowing that you actually mean something to someone.”

“You are the first person who I want to see when I wake up and the last person I want to see when I go to sleep.”

Dating sites

The term ‘dating sites’ is a common search term. Dating websites can be categorised into free sites and paid-for websites, they can be generic dating websites, or niche dating websites.

Each type has its own merits, so it’s important to ask your friends about what their experiences and to do a bit of background research about a website. Typing the name of the website, followed by ‘review’ is a useful way to find out what people think about a website.

Hand kissing

Hmm, this is a strangely prevalent search term. We hope that you’ve had the opportunity to kiss another human and not just your hand, but if you haven’t – don’t worry too much, it will come naturally if you don’t try too hard.

Please note that we have had to filter out some of the more risqué search terms, especially terms that are related to kissing.
