What Your Profile Says About You

Man typing on a laptopA dating profile can tell you a lot about someone, and it’s not just the words themselves that influence what people think of your dating profile; the length of the text can also make a difference.

Here are some classic examples of profiles (not taken from real profiles) to show you what each style of profile says about its creator.

The short profile

“Hi, I’m Linda, 43, a nurse from Glasgow. I have 3 children, a dog and 2 cats. I don’t like writing these kinds of things, so get in touch with me if you want to know more.”

A short profile shows that you are a no-nonsense kind of person, who doesn’t want to write too much about yourself. Alternatively, it can be a sign that you are a bit shy about the whole process of online dating and that you do not wish to share too much, too soon.

The long profile

I’m not going to recreate a long profile, but needless to say, that a long profile would be longer than this blog post.

A really long profile demonstrates that you are keen to show your true self instead of leaving any surprises. If you do choose to write a dating profile which is longer than 500 words, make sure that you space out the paragraphs so that people don’t become overwhelmed by a block of text.

The jokey profile

“There was a man from Preston, who had a little dog, a Weston, he now lives in The Dales, works with hay bales and can drive a tractor with the best of them.”

A jokey profile shows that you aren’t afraid to stand out from the crowd. Just make sure to include some information about yourself in your text as well as demonstrating your sense of humour.

The shopping list

“I’d like to meet someone aged between 25-35,  who is slim, between 5’1″ and 5’5″, likes children and has her own house”

It’s good to have an idea of what you’d like in a partner, but this type of profile looks a bit too prescriptive and can put people off getting in touch with you if they don’t quite meet your criteria. It can make you look fussy, but on the other hand, some people may admire you for knowing exactly what you want.

Whether you write 200 characters on 2000 characters, putting your profile online is the first and perhaps the most important stage of online dating and is the first step to meeting your perfect match.
